#it’s the little things between them that really tear my heart into pieces #such small things like calling him ‘james’ instead of ‘jim’ #the same way any father will use their child’s full name when they want their kid to take them seriously #pike’s tone is stern but if you look #the set of his mouth isn’t even disapproving or annoyed #and there’s just this faint hint of almost amusement in his eyes #this fond exasperation that he easily masks with a strict facade #i like to think that pike #when he was younger #was a lot like jim #and he sees himself or a past version of himself in jim #and wants to bring him to success and self-confidence #(real self-confidence #not the cocky persona jim puts forward) #pike is most likely the first person who put a strong arm on jim #(not a hitting hand or an angry slap but just a grip to restrain him when needed and steer him towards a better path) #and told him that he could achieve whatever he wanted #while giving him no room to hold himself to any standard except one of excellence #jim kirk may have made it to the top #but it was pike who gave him the ladder to climb him and kicked him in the ass to get him going #smiling to himself the entire time (via sweetfleet)
But! But but but!
Sam DOES follow, just not right away. Sam lives a long, prosperous, ridiculously happy life in Hobbiton with Rosie, with whom he has many children. He was mayor of Hobbiton SEVEN times until he retired at age 96, oversaw the establishment of the Shire as its own independent land, and was personally given the Star of the Dunedain by King Elessar as a gesture of friendship and love. But when Rosie passed away on Mid-Year’s day, Sam rode out from Bag End on September 22nd for the last time and finally followed Frodo to Valinor as the third and last Ringbearer to do so at the grand old age of 104.
He did exactly as Frodo asked him to. He was whole, and happy, and he enjoyed and did more than he could have ever imagined when he was a humble gardener listening in for tales of the Elves. And when he had lived out his life in peace and absolute happiness he earned his reward and followed Frodo home.
Sam got the life that Frodo, with all that he’d carried, the evil he’d had inside of him, etc, could never have. I love the image of a healed, happy Frodo welcoming his bff home and being all, “OKAY TELL ME ALL THE THINGS TELL ME ABOUT YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS AND GREAT GRANDKIDS ARE OUR TOWNSFOLK STILL DEAR AND COMFORTABLE AHHHHH SAM.”
Like, not only were battles and such inspired by Tolkien’s time in the war. So was the aftermath. I’m sure he knew many a Frodo from that time.
”JOHN tell me all about your kids!”
…I made myself cry.
#he really is disarmingly sweet and genuinely charming #he’s not even trying he’s just fucking like that #when he was born he probably apologized to his mom for the fuss and told a nurse she was pretty

Martin Freeman talking about the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
That’s my friend Mel (Fiver) he’s talking about. So much love.
She has been such a presence in the fan community too, on TOR.net and elsewhere for so long. When she got sick it hit the community so hard, and that she and her husband got flown to NZ, BY Peter Jackson, just.
She’ll be in the EE of Unexpected Journey.
